What is organic?
Organic refers to the way agriculture products, food and fiber are grown and produced. “Organic agriculture is an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.”
Organic products are those which are grown without pesticides, herbicides, antibotics, hormones, genetically modified organisms, and synthetic man made chemicals. Living an organic lifesyle is a great way to protect our environment and our bodies from these polluting chemicals.
Organic farming methods help to “nourish the land” by returning nutrients to the soil and keeping the air and water safe. Organic raw foods have superior taste, quality and a higher nutritional value than conventionally grown foods.
I was being a part of the Organic growers association in India during the year 2001. One of my professor was working for a Organic firm in Boston and he got 3 Neem based products that he want to market in India. I need to set up a marketing network for him and I got links with local organic farms. Truly speaking the word organic in those period is “Fashion”. There is an association from a private group which provides Organic Certificates to the Farms if they grow crops using only organic methods.
Among the 50 farms which I visited, most of them are not truly organic except only one which is in Annaikatti ( Hill Top) maintained by a well known architect from Coimbatore. I was really amazed when I look at his farm where he grows mangoes, coconut and a variety of crops 100% organic. He has his own organic fertilizer units. Amazing! But the key thing is he cannot market it and there is no platform for him to sell or active buyers. To my knowledge there are 2 shops in those days which claims they are Organic Shops. But the vegetables and fruits in that shop are all not fresh, pest infested and boring buyers environment. Before detailing let me explain the organic products.
My biggest questions in those time are” Where are the buyers?” and ” Where is the market platform?” ” Is this will be ever successful?
Few days back I was stunned to see a 100% Organic marketing on-line platform in Canada where you can order on-line and get a free delivery at home.
Amazing website. If you are a organic pro you would love this website. India needs such a platform to sell products.
At least ” The architect” would love this!
All Vancouverites can give a try..
